In past times, it was customary to sign an autograph book upon visiting a home. Many would leave poems, messages and art one could reflect on until they met again.

Excerpts from the autograph journal of Margaretta Morris

Here are some pages from the Margaretta Morris journal, started December 25th, 1850.

*NEW*
To Margaretta

May all the blessings of heaven descend
gently upon thee.  May thy days be with
-out disappointments, and thy nights be
spent in refreshing slumbers, and thy dreams be cheered with the smiles of thy
distant friends, and may the gay companions
of thy prosperous hours, never look coolly on
thee in the gloomy scenes of adversity, when
thy sun is obscured, and the shades of misfor
-tune gather around thee, may thy soul
never be stained with a deed that time
cannot erase, nor thy heart find excuse
for, may the rememberance of thy virtues,
and the smiles of God, cheer the evening
of thy days, when thy morning sun shall be
hid in the clouds.

                                      Thy Sister Sarah

The christians hope.

There is a star no gloom can shroud,
A hope no woe can sever;
A ray that through the darkest cloud,
Shines smilingly forever!

Then humble christian, fearless go.
Though darkest woes assail thee;
Though dangers press, and sorrows flow,
this hope shall never fail thee!
